10,000 Miles by James Farrar, Jr.

James Farrar

The first 60 miles out and the last 60 miles in may be the hardest miles I do
But it doesn’t mean the other 10,000 miles a month are easy to travel without you
To make it easier I carry a piece of your spirit in my heart it’s true
And there’s always a part of mine I leave home with you
But thank God for modern technology so we can Skype, text, or call
I don’t know how truckers managed 40 years ago without it all
I often hear while I’m on the road that the world is carried on the back of 18 wheels
That we’re important to everyone sitting home at night, but it sometimes feels
That the days and weeks away from you seem like months and years
It sometimes causes a catch in my voice and when alone sometimes tears
Because no matter the beauty I see traveling in the mountains, rivers, and sky
Don’t compare to the beauty of the love I see and feel coming home to look into your eyes
No matter if I’m holding your hand while walking or holding you close at night
Only the seconds we’re together makes the world feel right
But it always seems those few hours or days pass too quickly out of sight
And once again I have to leave and leaving don’t feel right
People always seem to be in a rush to get by truckers on the road
With rude gestures, words, and actions carrying ill will so cold
Sometimes they get so angry that we’re in their way
Though I doubt they realize what we give up as they go about their day
We give up the most precious thing, the one we can never get back in life
The thing they take for granted, time with child, husband, or wife
The 1st 60 miles out and the last 60 miles in may be the hardest miles I do
But it doesn’t mean the other 10,000 miles a month are easy to travel without you
