Prime Inc values the time of their drivers and know that every second counts. They have been working to put their drivers at the heart of their company since 1970. From technology in the truck to the support system available 24/7 to their fleet, Prime is going the extra mile to help their drivers be successful, safe, and profitable while crisscrossing the United States and Canada to help deliver freight.
One way Prime is doing this is by working hard to get their drivers paid for having to wait at shippers and receivers. No one likes waiting, and if you’re being held up at a customer, Prime believes you deserve to be paid for your time with detention pay. In January of 2015, Prime paid out over 1 million dollars in detention pay to its fleet.
Sometimes, drivers will wonder why they didn’t see detention pay for having to sit at a dock for hours on end. We’ve combined some of the best tips to help you get paid what you deserve when it comes to detention.
- Communicate, communicate, communicate. If something is delaying you, be sure to message dispatch letting them know. Even if you think you’ll be leaving right at the end of the detention grace period, let dispatch know.
- Pay attention to the stop notes on your QC. They tell you what you need to know for detention at specific locations
- Scan in all documents you have for a trip (gate passes, trailer control records, bills with times) and make sure they are scanned clearly.
- Arrive early, if possible.
- Get your bills scanned in as soon as possible. Some customers require detention to be submitted the day it occurs
- Give accurate arrival and departure times.
- If you use the detention stamp, try and get the location where detention occurs to sign it.
Prime will continue to do what they can to help their drivers earn what they deserve for their hard work and dedication out on the road. If you have any questions about detention pay, speak with your Fleet Manager.
