After serving 12 years in the Army, Robert “Cory” Brown now works as a Lease Team Trainer at Prime, where he loves seeing new places every day while driving refrigerated freight across the country.
Cory tells us how a fellow Army veteran convinced him to Drive for Prime and shares a few words of wisdom for new drivers.
How long have you been Driving for Prime? How long have you been a driver?
I’ve been a Prime Driver since August 2015. I’ve been a professional truck driver for 5 years total.
What did you do before becoming a truck driver? What profession or industry did you work in?
Directional drilling/equipment operator for 2 years after 12 years in the Army as a Combat Engineer.
Tell us how you decided to become a truck driver. Why did you choose Prime?
I had my CDL for years prior to joining Prime. I was referred to Prime by a current driver, William Hoover. Hoover and I served in the Army together. He talked me into coming to Prime.
What is your favorite thing about being a truck driver? What’s the biggest challenge?
I love being in a different place every day, finding that new road. [The biggest challenge is] balancing home time and family with work.
What is your advice to new drivers?
Be patient and professional. [When] things go wrong, don’t take it personal. The more flexible you are, the less stressed you’ll be.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to fly my 1946 Bellanca Cruisair, along with fishing, though I don’t get to do near enough of it.
